Here are three benefits of high flow, central ECMO:

• Achieving high flow rates, which may lead to faster resolution of shock: Central ECMO allows for optimal venous drainage and arterial return because of the cannulation sites, which allows for high flows when necessary.

• Avoiding differential hypoxemia: High flow, central ECMO can help to avoid differential hypoxemia, a condition in which there is a difference in the oxygen saturation of the blood in the upper and lower body.

• Complete cardiac and pulmonary support: Central ECMO can provide complete cardiac and pulmonary support. This can be especially beneficial for patients who are critically ill and have failure of both their heart and lungs.
